Stop Making Migraines Worse

Migraines are truly horrible and can be dehabilitating for days. A migraine can sneak up unexpectedly or grow gradually through a day until it reaches a point where lights, sounds and movement can cause excruciating pain and even nausea. The worst part of all is that many of us actually make migraines worse.

There are certain things that are known to trigger or accelerate migraines. These triggers are found all around us and if we’re not careful can make our life miserable.

The most common triggers for migraines include:

Stress
Stress is a part of our lives, but you should do what you can to control your reaction to stressful situations. Exercise, take breaks, breathe deeply and get plenty of rest. The more stressed you are, the more likely you are to succumb to a migraine.

Menstruation
It is not possible to control menstruation without chemicals, but birth control pills are now available that limit or eliminate menstruation. If menstruation is a trigger for your migraines, ask your doctor about going on one of these newer pills.

Sleep Irregularity
It is healthiest for everyone to get enough sleep, but not too much. Going to bed at about the same time and waking at about the same time every day can improve energy levels and overall health. It can also help prevent migraines.

Skipping Meals
As tempting as it might be to skip breakfast – don’t. Missing meals can easily trigger a migraine. Then, you’re not only weak from not eating properly; you’re also burdened with a serious migraine.

Changes in Weather
Unfortunately we can’t control it, but the weather can affect migraines. Changes in barometric pressure especially can set of migraines as the pressures rise and fall around us.

Bright and Reflected Sunlight
Even the person least prone to migraines can be affected by bright sunlight. We all squint when coming into the light and this alone can start a headache. To avoid sunlight triggers, invest in an excellent pair of polarized and dark sunglasses. Then be sure to wear them before stepping or looking into a sunlit area.

Chocolate
It’s a shame, but chocolate has certain ingredients and elements that can trigger migraines. For some, milk chocolate is less potent, but if chocolate is a trigger for you, or any other food for that matter, it makes the most sense to just avoid it. After all, vanilla ice cream is almost as good.

Caffeine
Too much caffeine or coming off a caffeine high can pull the most level-headed individual under. Caffeine is a powerful drug, and its effects can be devastating on those who suffer from migraines. Limit or eliminate it from your diet for the best results.

Smoking
If you smoke and suffer from migraines – stop smoking. If not for your lungs, do it for your head. Being around smoke can trigger a migraine, so even if you don’t smoke, be sure to steer clear of smoky bars or friends who light up.
