You may have heard some people claim “I’m not worried about COVID-19 because I’m young“.
This is a false assumption because, factually speaking, young and healthy people can get the coronavirus who can also end up in the hospital at higher rates than previously expected.
An early analysis released by the CDC dated 18th March said that adults between the ages of 20 to 54 comprised 38 percent of 508 known hospitalisation cases. Twenty percent of these individuals were between 20 and 64 years of age. It’s true that the elderly are at higher risk but it doesn’t imply everyone else will remain unaffected.
COVID-19 is a serious pandemic. For mild to moderate cases, symptoms range from cold-like symptoms to pneumonia, that don’t require oxygen. The worst-case scenario is that you’ll have to visit the hospital. As of yet, within the US, one out of every eight confirmed cases have required hospitalisation.
Remember the difficulties faced in acquiring toilet paper or bottled water? Remember cursing those stocking up supplies in bulk?
If the current infection rate continues, there won’t be enough hospital beds or ventilators for those in critical need.
